Miss Marshall (Y4/5)

We hope you have had a fantastic Christmas break and are looking forward to a new term of learning!

Our first class book this year is called Cinnamon by Neil Gaiman.

In a hot, hot country, ringed with mountains on one side and jungle on the other, lives a princess called Cinnamon. Her eyes are made of pearls, which means that she is blind. And, for reasons her parents, Rajah and Rani cannot fathom, she will not talk.

We will join Princess Cinnamon on her journey to discover herself with the help of a surprising teacher – a tiger! This fascinating book will allow us to create vivid setting descriptions, captivating narratives and thoughtful, balanced arguments.

In maths, we will be building our knowledge of number by tackling fractions and decimals and our Year 5s will also be looking at percentages for the first time. Our Year 4s have their Multiplication Tables Check this year, so we will also be practicing our times tables – make sure you’re also practicing at home on Times Tables Rockstars!

Our science topic for our Year 4s is states of matter, where we will look at how solids, liquids and gases behave. Our Year 5s will be taking a trip into outer space by exploring our solar system and all the incredible things to be found out there.

In history, our Year 4s will travel back in time to Roman Britain whilst our Year 5s get to know one of Britain’s most notorious dynasties – the Tudors! In geography, Year 4 will be looking at mountains and rivers and Year 5 will be investigating how land is used in the UK.

In PE, we will be completing both floor and apparatus-based gymnastics as well as seeing how to look after our bodies through health and fitness. Our PE day will continue to be a Monday – please make sure you come to school in the correct PE kit on this day.

*Please note – the confirmed dates for the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check are Monday 1st June – Friday 12th June. Children will be tested over this two-week period*

How can I help my child at home?

Make sure you read with your child at least 5 times per week.

Help your child to complete their weekly spelling and handwriting homework to develop key skills

Ensure your child completes 20 minutes of Times Tables Rockstars each week to develop fluency and accuracy. Our Year 4s will complete their Multiplication Tables Check this year, so please make sure you practice as much as possible.

Please make sure you complete your written and timestable homework weekly, five reads every week, arrive in the correct PE kit and have an attendance of 96% or above to be ‘In It To Win It’!

We are looking forward to a fantastic start to the year together in 4/5M, and we hope to continue to:

'Be the Best we can Be'!
